Battery skip rates: how are these increasing carbon emissions?
The Opening Balancing Platform launched on the 12th of December. This is the first step in the ESO modernizing how they dispatch battery energy average in the Balance Mechanism and is key to reducing skip rates. This will potentially have a much bigger impact than just increasing revenues for batteries. We estimate that the skipping of batteries in favor of turning up other technologies, especially gas fuel generation has increased carbon emission by 71,000 tonnes in 2023. Skipping in favor of turning down gas and other technologies does reduce emissions, but this impact is much smaller.
